After years of debate, Germany has officially legalized cannabis for personal use, making it the largest country in Europe to take this step. The new law, which came into effect in 2024, marks a significant shift in drug policy and is expected to reshape the cannabis landscape across the continent.
Under the new legislation, German citizens aged 18 and older can:
✔ Possess up to 25 grams of cannabis for personal use.
✔ Grow up to three plants per person at home.
✔ Join cannabis clubs, where members can collectively cultivate and distribute cannabis for non-commercial purposes.
However, public consumption remains restricted in certain areas, and commercial sales are still prohibited, meaning dispensaries won’t be opening anytime soon.
Germany’s move to legalize cannabis has sparked discussions across the European Union, with some countries, like France and the Netherlands, reassessing their own cannabis policies.
“The German model is unique because it blends personal freedom with strict regulations,” says Dr. Markus Schäfer, a drug policy expert. “It could serve as a blueprint for other EU nations considering legalization.”
With this historic shift, Germany is set to become a leader in the European cannabis industry, opening doors for further legislative changes and economic opportunities.
